2025 Korea payment quick start
Cards (EMV chip) are widely accepted; cash is for small markets or rural spots. Use ATMs labeled Global/International for foreign-card withdrawals. Whenever a terminal or ATM offers Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC), choose KRW to avoid poor rates. Keep one backup card and a small amount of cash.
• Exchange at banks/authorized counters (most banks 09:00–16:00, weekdays).
• Visa/Mastercard work broadly; AmEx at large stores/hotels.
• Apple Pay exists in Korea, but contactless acceptance varies—carry a physical chip card.
• Transit: use Tmoney/M-Pass. Tourist prepaid combos like WOWPASS/NAMANE add retail payments + transit in one card.
• On any “Pay in KRW or in your home currency?” screen, pick KRW.

Cash & exchange: KRW essentials
Where to exchange & hours
Use banks or authorized exchange centers. Typical bank hours are 09:00–16:00 on weekdays (check local variations). Airports have counters; city branches may offer more competitive spreads—compare before committing. Worn or damaged bills can be refused, so bring clean notes.

Cards in Korea: chip, contactless & networks
What works where
Standard EMV chip payments are ubiquitous. Visa/Mastercard (Plus/Cirrus) are broadly accepted; AmEx mainly at large stores/hotels. Some small stalls remain cash-only; carry a little cash for flexibility.
Contactless & mobile wallets
Apple Pay launched in Korea in 2023. Visitors can often tap with Apple Pay/Google Wallet where terminals support international contactless, but acceptance can vary by processor; keep a physical chip card as backup. Domestic wallets like Samsung Pay, Kakao Pay, Naver Pay usually require Korean KYC and a local card/account. Regional pilots such as open-loop Visa transit on Jeju buses are expanding—verify local availability during your trip.
ATMs: withdrawing with foreign cards
Find & use “Global” machines
Look for Global/International signage or Visa/Plus, Mastercard/Cirrus logos. Many bank lobbies and convenience stores have them; late-night access is common at convenience stores, which may charge higher local fees.
Fees you’ll see (read the screen)
- Local ATM fee: shown on-screen before you confirm; varies by bank/ATM.
- Issuer fees: your bank may add foreign usage or FX markups—check policies before travel.
- DCC prompts: if asked to bill in your home currency, decline and choose KRW.
Mobile options for visitors: Tmoney, WOWPASS, NAMANE
Tmoney / M-Pass
Tmoney is the go-to transit card, sold at subway stations, convenience stores, and airports; it also works for small purchases at many partners. M-Pass offers time-windowed unlimited rides (city/term rules apply). Load with cash or accepted cards at kiosks.
Tourist prepaid combos (WOWPASS / NAMANE)
WOWPASS and NAMANE target travelers: one plastic supports IC-insert retail payments + transit tap. Issue/charge at kiosks or via app. Top-up methods and partner rules may change—always confirm in the official app before relying on a single load method.
Kakao Pay / Naver Pay / Seoul QR & Zero Pay
Domestic wallets generally require Korean KYC and a local funding source, but initiatives like Seoul QR and Zero Pay allow certain overseas wallets/cards at designated merchants. Check current coverage maps and lists.
Avoiding extra fees & DCC
On the screen: pick KRW
If a terminal or ATM offers to bill you in your home currency, it usually includes a markup. Choose KRW instead and let your network/bank convert at wholesale-based rates. Keep receipts to dispute any wrong-currency charges.
Pre-trip card setup
- Enable overseas usage and register a PIN usable for offline chip/ATMs.
- Confirm issuer fees and per-transaction cash withdrawal limits.
- Carry a backup card and small cash, stored separately.
Troubleshooting & edge cases
If your payment fails
Retry chip-insert, split the amount, ask to use a different terminal, try another card or pay cash. Some deposits (hotels/rentals) are smoother on credit than debit/prepaid due to holds.
Lost card & billing errors
Report loss immediately and keep receipts/screenshots. For DCC billed by mistake when you chose KRW, contact your issuer to dispute with evidence.
